God's Fate (Yehuda Amichai)

The fate of God

Is now like the fate of

Trees and stones, sun and moon

Which they stopped believing in

When they began believing in Him.

But He is compelled to remain with us:

At least like the trees, at least like the stones.

And like the sun and like the moon and like the stars.

(Yehuda Amichai [1924-2000] is one of the great modern Israeli poets)
